The lawsuit claims that the sites\u2019 algorithms helped to radicalize the shooter with racist ideas, challenging the limits of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/recode\/2020\/5\/28\/21273241\/section-230-explained-supreme-court-social-media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Section 230<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 a federal law that has generally protected internet platforms from liability for content posted by their users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About one-in-five Americans (22%) say they use Reddit, including 8% who say they regularly get news on the site, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/fact-sheet\/social-media-and-news-fact-sheet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2023 Center survey<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, 82% of U.S. adults say they use YouTube and 26% report regularly getting news there. And a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2020\/09\/28\/youtube-news-consumers-about-as-likely-to-use-the-site-for-opinions-as-for-facts\/#:~:text=As%20a%20feature,never%20do%20this.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2020 survey<\/a>&nbsp;found that 78% of&nbsp;YouTube news consumers reported watching news videos recommended by the site\u2019s algorithm at least occasionally, while a similar share said these recommendations are at least somewhat good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:27px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"new-from-pew-research\">\ud83d\udea8 <strong>New from Pew Research Center<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2024\/03\/19\/how-hispanic-americans-get-their-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new Pew Research Center survey<\/a> explores how Hispanic Americans get their news, including the languages in which they consume news and their engagement with Hispanic media outlets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Key findings include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Just over half of U.S. Hispanic adults (54%) get their news mostly in English \u2013 far higher than the share who get their news mostly in Spanish (21%).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Half of Hispanic adults at least sometimes get news from Hispanic outlets (i.e., those that specifically cater to Hispanic audiences).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Attention to news is declining among U.S. Latinos, a trend that mirrors the one found among the general public.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Most Latino adults prefer digital devices for getting news, far outpacing those who prefer television, radio or print.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:27px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"under-the-radar\">\ud83d\udccc&nbsp;<strong>In other news<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Google <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/business\/media\/google-fined-eur250-million-in-france-over-dispute-with-news-publishers-1ec8d76c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fined in France<\/a> over <strong>dispute with news publishers<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Trump allies&#8217; <\/strong>claims about censorship <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/03\/17\/us\/politics\/trump-disinformation-2024-social-media.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hinder efforts to combat election disinformation<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Gannett <\/strong>and <strong>McClatchy <\/strong>will <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/wireStory\/gannett-news-chain-stop-ap-content-time-century-108289489\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stop using Associated Press content<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>India <\/strong>will start to <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2024\/03\/20\/india-grants-govt-agency-power-to-fact-check-govt-matters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">monitor and fact-check social media posts<\/a> about government matters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How <strong>high school newspapers<\/strong> are staying away from digital-only models and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cjr.org\/analysis\/the-echo-high-school-print-got-cool-again.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sticking with a physical paper<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A look at a <strong>Minnesota news outlet<\/strong> that serves its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niemanlab.org\/2024\/03\/how-sahan-journal-grew-into-a-vital-source-of-news-and-information-for-minnesotas-immigrant-communities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">local immigrant communities<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:27px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"looking-ahead\">\ud83d\udcc5&nbsp;<strong>Looking ahead<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/03\/18\/supreme-court-murthy-missouri-problems-00147591\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Supreme Court <\/a>appeared skeptical\u00a0Monday over a lawsuit seeking to stop <strong>the Biden administration from urging social media companies to take down information it sees as false or objectionable.<\/strong> The plaintiffs argued that the administration&#8217;s actions, which applied to alleged misinformation about COVID-19 vaccines and election fraud, amounted to unconstitutional coercion under the First Amendment. A ruling is expected by June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than half of Americans say both the U.S. government and technology companies <strong>should take steps to restrict false information online,<\/strong> according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2023\/07\/20\/most-americans-favor-restrictions-on-false-information-violent-content-online\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2023 survey<\/a>. There is more support for tech companies than the government doing this kind of moderation, but the share of U.S. adults who say the federal government should restrict false information has grown from 39% in 2018 to 55% in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:27px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"chart-of-the-week\">\ud83d\udcca&nbsp;<strong>Chart of the week<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This week\u2019s chart looks at the languages in which Hispanic Americans consume news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Most Hispanic adults who were born in the U.S. (81%) say they mainly get news in English,<\/strong> compared with just 26% of Hispanic immigrants.
