Calling the inquiry \u201cbased on lies,\u201d White House Counsel\u2019s Office spokesman Ian Sams wrote in the letter that \u201ccovering impeachment as a process story \u2013 Republicans say X, but the White House says Y \u2013 is a disservice to the American public.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Journalists in the United States differ markedly from the general public in their views of whether journalists should always strive to give equal coverage to all sides of an issue, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2022\/07\/13\/u-s-journalists-differ-from-the-public-in-their-views-of-bothsidesism-in-journalism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent Pew Research Center study<\/a>. A little more than half of the journalists surveyed (55%) say that <strong>every side does <em>not<\/em> always deserve equal news coverage<\/strong>. By contrast, 22% of Americans overall say the same, whereas about three-quarters (76%) say journalists <em>should<\/em> always strive to give all sides equal coverage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:27px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"new-from-pew-research\">\ud83d\udea8 <strong>New from Pew Research Center<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our new fact sheets explore the trends in television news across three formats: <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/fact-sheet\/local-tv-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">local TV news<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/fact-sheet\/cable-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cable TV news<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/fact-sheet\/network-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">network TV news<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In 2022, <strong>local TV news audiences remained relatively stable<\/strong> from the previous year. Financially, local TV companies generated more revenue in 2022 than in 2021, consistent with a cyclical pattern in which advertising revenue rises in election years and falls in non-election years.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On <strong>cable TV, <\/strong>both <strong>prime-time and daytime cable news audiences increased for Fox News <\/strong>in 2022 but decreased for CNN, MSNBC and Newsmax.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Audiences for network TV news have remained largely stable in recent years. The law requires that social media companies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jurist.org\/news\/2023\/09\/elon-musks-x-corp-challenges-california-law-that-requires-social-media-companies-publish-content-moderation-policies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">publish content moderation policies<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2023\/07\/20\/most-americans-favor-restrictions-on-false-information-violent-content-online\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Center survey conducted earlier this year<\/a> found that Americans are more likely to say tech companies should take steps to <strong>restrict false information and extremely violent content online <\/strong>than they are to support the government doing so. For example, 65% of Americans say tech companies should restrict false information online, while 55% say the U.S. government should do this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:27px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"chart-of-the-week\">\ud83d\udcca&nbsp;<strong>Chart of the week<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The White House <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/09\/12\/media\/white-house-letter-news-executives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">called for more intensive reporting<\/a> on House Republicans\u2019 impeachment inquiry on Wednesday. A Pew Research Center survey conducted during the Trump administration in 2019 found <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2020\/02\/26\/most-say-journalists-should-be-watchdogs-but-views-of-how-well-they-fill-this-role-vary-by-party-media-diet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">broad support for the concept of media scrutiny of those in power<\/a>, albeit with partisan differences. <strong>While 83% of Democrats said it was important for journalists to serve as watchdogs over elected leaders, 61% of Republicans shared this view<\/strong>.
