This step is part of the company&#8217;s broader effort to move away from featuring news and political content following years of debate over Facebook\u2019s role in misinformation and political polarization. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While Facebook continues to outpace all other social media sites as a news source for Americans, there are signs that\u00a0<strong>fewer Americans are getting news there<\/strong>. Three-in-ten U.S. adults say they regularly get news on Facebook, according to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/fact-sheet\/social-media-and-news-fact-sheet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2023 Pew Research Center survey<\/a>, down from 36% in 2020. The Times has previously had success with audio news, with nearly 1 million podcast downloads last year, according to Axios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The share of the U.S. public listening to online audio has roughly doubled in the past decade<\/strong>, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/fact-sheet\/audio-and-podcasting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">data from Edison Research<\/a>. Their 2023 survey found that 70% of Americans ages 12 and older had listened to online audio in the past week, up from 36% in 2014.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:27px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"chart-of-the-week\">\ud83d\udcca&nbsp;<strong>Chart of the week<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our chart this week highlights Americans\u2019 attention to news about the Israel-Hamas war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/2024\/03\/21\/majority-in-u-s-say-israel-has-valid-reasons-for-fighting-fewer-say-the-same-about-hamas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent Center survey<\/a>&nbsp;shows that <strong>22% of U.S. adults say they have been following the news about the conflict extremely or very closely<\/strong>, while an additional 35% are following somewhat closely.
