Meanwhile, the explosion at a Gaza hospital on Tuesday led to competing narratives about who was responsible and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/10\/18\/media\/gaza-hospital-bombing-dueling-claims\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">uncertainty about what actually happened<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2019, we asked Americans how confident they were in <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2019\/06\/27\/republicans-far-more-likely-than-democrats-to-say-fact-checkers-tend-to-favor-one-side\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">their own ability to check the accuracy of a news story<\/a>. About three-in-ten (29%) said they were very confident they would know what steps to take if they wanted to <strong>check the accuracy of a news story themselves<\/strong>, while 46% were only somewhat confident and 24% were not too or not at all confident.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reports on the cause of the hospital tragedy vary widely depending on which sources are cited. But in 2021, we found that just 22% of U.S. adults say they <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2021\/06\/09\/what-makes-a-news-story-trustworthy-americans-point-to-the-outlet-that-publishes-it-sources-cited\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pay very close attention to the sources in news stories<\/a>, while 45% pay somewhat close attention to them and about a third pay little or no attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:27px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"under-the-radar\">\ud83d\udccc&nbsp;<strong>In other news<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>X <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2023\/oct\/18\/x-twitter-1-dollar-annual-subscription-fee-new-users-elon-musk-new-zealand-nz-philippines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rolls out $1 annual fee<\/a> for new users in New Zealand and the Philippines to <strong>combat bot activity<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>MSNBC <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.semafor.com\/article\/10\/13\/2023\/inside-msnbcs-middle-east-conflict\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shuffles anchor roles<\/a> amid Israel-Hamas war<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cjr.org\/local_news\/solutions-oriented-cleveland-documentars-community-foundation.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Local news outlets funded by philanthropies<\/a> are <strong>blending journalism with grassroots community work <\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Epoch Times<\/strong>, a right-wing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/epoch-times-falun-gong-growth-rcna111373\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">conspiracy niche<\/a>, grows its reach and revenue<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Successful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niemanlab.org\/2023\/10\/the-nigeria-fact-checkers-coalition-showed-how-collaborative-journalism-can-work-in-west-africa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">collaborative journalism<\/a> debunks false information in <strong>West Africa&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A look into how an<strong> Instagram meme page<\/strong> became <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/style\/media\/2023\/10\/18\/only-in-dade-success-miami-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a key news source in Miami<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:27px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"looking-ahead\">\ud83d\udcc5&nbsp;<strong>Looking ahead<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This week, Google announced that YouTube will roll out a new immersive watch page experience designed to suggest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/10\/18\/23922070\/youtube-news-immersive-watch-page-experience-shortform\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more news content from \u201cauthoritative sources.&#8221;<\/a> Google has also pledged $1.6 million to <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.youtube\/news-and-events\/investing-in-a-multi-format-news-watching-experience\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">promote the creation of short-form news content<\/a> with news organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A quarter of U.S. adults said in <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/fact-sheet\/social-media-and-news-fact-sheet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a 2022 Center survey<\/a> that they regularly get news on YouTube, greater than the share who get news on any other social media site except Facebook (31%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:27px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"chart-of-the-week\">\ud83d\udcca&nbsp;<strong>Chart of the week<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With misinformation and competing narratives circulating in the coverage of the Israel-Hamas war, this week&#8217;s chart looks at various <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2020\/08\/31\/americans-largely-see-news-organizations-as-opaque-particularly-when-it-comes-to-finances\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reasons why Americans believe mistakes can make their way into news stories<\/a>. About half of U.S. adults (55%) site careless reporting as a major reason why mistakes make their way into news stories.
