This includes 10% of U.S. teens who say they are on Instagram \u201calmost constantly.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:27px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"new-from-pew-research\">\ud83d\udea8 <strong>New from Pew Research Center<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2023\/10\/24\/americans-are-following-the-news-less-closely-than-they-used-to\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new Pew Research Center analysis of surveys from 2016 to 2022<\/a> finds that a declining share of Americans say they have been following the news closely.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Key findings include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>share of U.S. adults who say they follow the news all or most of the time fell<\/strong> from 51% in 2016 to 38% in 2022, the last time we asked this question.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A rising share of Americans say they follow the news only &#8220;now and then.&#8221;<\/strong> While 12% of adults said this in 2016, that figure increased to 19% by 2022. And while 5% said in 2016 that they hardly ever follow the news, 9% said the same last year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 2016, 57% of <strong>Republicans and independents who lean Rep\u00ad\u00adublican<\/strong> said they followed the news all or most of the time. In the 2022 survey, 37% said the same, a decrease of 20 percentage points. One chief claim that the DOJ has made is that users do not seem to actively choose a search engine and that Google is often the default.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a 2022 Center survey, we found that 60% of U.S. adults <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/fact-sheet\/news-platform-fact-sheet\/?tabId=tab-b39b851c-e417-48ef-9b10-93ee21a0030e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">get news at least sometimes from search engines<\/a> such as Google and that about <strong>one-in-ten Americans prefer to get their news through search<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:27px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"chart-of-the-week\">\ud83d\udcca&nbsp;<strong>Chart of the week<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This week we released <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2023\/10\/24\/americans-are-following-the-news-less-closely-than-they-used-to\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a new analysis<\/a> on how closely Americans say they follow the news.
