This discrepancy has prompted some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/tv-movies\/tv-movie-news\/jon-stewart-hantavirus-media-coverage-the-daily-show-1235561051\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">criticism of the news coverage<\/a>.<br><br>While the hantavirus and COVID-19 are very different, the outbreak has evoked memories of the pandemic in 2020. <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2025\/02\/12\/5-years-later-america-looks-back-at-the-impact-of-covid-19\/#the-information-environment-many-say-the-media-exaggerated-the-risks-of-covid-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Back in 2024<\/a>, <strong>54% of Americans said the news media exaggerated the risks of COVID-19, <\/strong>including 38% who said news organizations greatly exaggerated the risks.<br><br>Republicans were much more likely than Democrats to say the media exaggerated the risks of COVID-19. that traditional media need to <strong>regain viewers\u2019 trust<\/strong> with transparency and clarity in the news they report, <strong>reconnect with audiences<\/strong> by developing new ways for viewers to get to know journalists, and <strong>reinvent how news is produced<\/strong> and delivered to audiences across platforms.<br><br>In the U.S., we have <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/fact-sheet\/social-media-and-news-fact-sheet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">witnessed substantial growth<\/a> in recent years in the share of Americans who say they regularly get news on YouTube, Instagram and TikTok. <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2025\/12\/03\/young-adults-and-the-future-of-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Young adults<\/a> are much more likely than their elders to get news from social media and <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/fact-sheet\/news-influencers-fact-sheet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">news influencers specifically<\/a>, and much less likely to turn to a preferred news organization to get <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2026\/03\/24\/where-do-americans-turn-first-for-information-about-breaking-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer
