Companies that could face these taxes include <strong>Google,<\/strong> <strong>Meta <\/strong>(which owns Facebook and Instagram), and <strong>TikTok<\/strong>. \u201cWe believe it\u2019s only fair that large digital platforms contribute to the hard work of journalism that enriches their feeds and that drives their revenue,\u201d Australian Communications Minister Anika Wells said. But major tech companies have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2026\/apr\/28\/albanese-tech-companies-australian-media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pushed back strongly<\/a>, with a Meta spokesperson calling the proposal \u201csimply wrong.\u201d<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div width=\"100%\" class=\"ng-block-b1651d0eb66ed485 wp-block-newsletterglue-text ng-block\" style=\"color:#2a2a2a\"><div><div><div class=\"ng-block-td\" align=\"none\" style=\"font-size:16px;font-family:Georgia;line-height:1.6;font-weight:normal;padding-top:8px;padding-bottom:10px;padding-left:20px;padding-right:20px;text-align:none;color:#2a2a2a\"><p>The <strong>growing usage of tech companies\u2019 products for news consumption<\/strong> is part of the government\u2019s justification for the policy. In the U.S., 38% of adults say they <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/fact-sheet\/social-media-and-news-fact-sheet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">regularly get news on Facebook<\/a>, a similar share (35%) regularly gets news on YouTube, and 20% each get news on TikTok and Instagram.
