Researchers at CBS found that among hundreds of posts by Musk about election security this year, 55% either contain misleading or false statements, or amplify posts that do this.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div width=\"100%\" class=\"ng-block-630cbfbcf8e83440 wp-block-newsletterglue-text ng-block\" style=\"color:#2a2a2a\"><div><div><div class=\"ng-block-td\" align=\"none\" style=\"font-size:16px;font-family:Georgia;line-height:1.6;font-weight:normal;padding-top:8px;padding-bottom:10px;padding-left:20px;padding-right:20px;text-align:none;color:#2a2a2a\"><p>This comes at a time when <strong>65% of U.S. X users say getting news is a reason they use the platform,<\/strong> according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2024\/06\/12\/x-users-experiences-with-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2024 Center survey<\/a>. And 59% of X users cite <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/2024\/06\/12\/how-americans-navigate-politics-on-tiktok-x-facebook-and-instagram\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">keeping up with politics<\/a> as a reason for using it. At the same time, the vast majority of Americans who regularly get news on X say they at least sometimes see news there that seems inaccurate, including 37% who see this extremely or fairly often.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div width=\"100%\" class=\"ng-block-80c92d53f8e0d86a wp-block-newsletterglue-text ng-block\" style=\"color:#2a2a2a\"><div><div><div class=\"ng-block-td\" align=\"none\" style=\"font-size:16px;font-family:Georgia;line-height:1.6;font-weight:normal;padding-top:8px;padding-bottom:10px;padding-left:20px;padding-right:20px;text-align:none;color:#2a2a2a\"><p>There have been <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/2024\/06\/12\/how-americans-navigate-politics-on-tiktok-x-facebook-and-instagram\/#social-media-and-democracy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">major shifts in the way Republicans and Democrats view the site<\/a> in recent years. In 2021, Democratic users (including Democratic-leaning independents) were more likely than Republicans and GOP leaners who use the site to say Twitter was mostly good for American democracy, while Republicans were much more likely to say it was mostly bad. But those patterns are now flipped: <strong>Republican users are now twice as likely as Democratic users to say X is mostly good for democracy<\/strong> (53% vs. 26%), while Democrats are three times noopener\">onslaught of disinformation<\/a> in real time ahead of Election Day on Nov. 5. While several <strong>state and local election officials are working to quickly debunk false narratives<\/strong> regarding claims of illegal voting or miscounted ballots, they also are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/22\/politics\/election-officials-misinformation\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">urging people to verify the information<\/a> they see on social media.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div width=\"100%\" class=\"ng-block-f959a21512ed8b19 wp-block-newsletterglue-text ng-block\" style=\"color:#2a2a2a\"><div><div><div class=\"ng-block-td\" align=\"none\" style=\"font-size:16px;font-family:Georgia;line-height:1.6;font-weight:normal;padding-top:8px;padding-bottom:10px;padding-left:20px;padding-right:20px;text-align:none;color:#2a2a2a\"><p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2024\/10\/10\/americans-views-of-2024-election-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent survey<\/a>, we found that <strong>most U.S. adults (73%) say they have seen inaccurate election news at least somewhat often,<\/strong> and about half (52%) say they find it difficult to determine what is true and what is not. Republicans and independents who lean toward the GOP are more likely than Democrats and Democratic leaners to express these views.
