With the widespread loss of phone service \u2013 and  the spread of misinformation online \u2013 <strong>old-fashioned media<\/strong> like <strong>radio stations<\/strong> are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/10\/01\/helene-north-carolina-media-misinformation-fact-checking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">helping people navigate the aftermath<\/a> of the natural disaster.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div width=\"100%\" class=\"ng-block-e455ffb7c0b98166 wp-block-newsletterglue-text ng-block\" style=\"color:#2a2a2a\"><div><div><div class=\"ng-block-td\" align=\"none\" style=\"font-size:16px;font-family:Georgia;line-height:1.6;font-weight:normal;padding-top:8px;padding-bottom:10px;padding-left:20px;padding-right:20px;text-align:none;color:#2a2a2a\"><p>Most U.S. adults (85%) say <strong>local news outlets are at least somewhat important to the well-being of their local community<\/strong>, including 44% who say they are extremely or very important, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2024\/05\/07\/views-of-local-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2024 Center survey<\/a>. But locals\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2024\/05\/07\/sources-of-local-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">access to certain kinds of news outlets<\/a> may be limited by where they live. Americans who live in rural areas are much less likely than others to say there is a TV news station covering their local area.
