He is an expert on probability-based online panels, nonprobability survey methods, survey nonresponse and statistical analysis. His research focuses on methods of identifying and correcting bias in survey samples. He leads the Center\u2019s research on nonprobability samples and co-authored several\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/2018\/01\/26\/for-weighting-online-opt-in-samples-what-matters-most\/\">reports<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/poq\/article-abstract\/81\/S1\/250\/3749176\">publications<\/a>\u00a0on the subject. He also served on the American Association for Public Opinion Research\u2019s task force on <a href=\"https:\/\/aapor.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Task-Force-Report-FINAL.pdf\">Data Quality Metrics for Online Samples<\/a>. He has authored blog posts and analyses making methodological concepts such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2016\/09\/08\/understanding-the-margin-of-error-in-election-polls\/\">margin of error<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2016\/10\/25\/oversampling-is-used-to-study-small-groups-not-bias-poll-results\/\">oversampling<\/a>\u00a0accessible to a general audience. Prior to joining the Center, Mercer was a senior survey methodologist at Westat. He received a bachelor\u2019s degree in political science from Carleton College and master\u2019s and doctoral degrees in survey methodology from the University of Maryland.
