He is an applied computational social scientist focused on communication, behavior and public opinion. His research also evaluates the promise and pitfalls of emerging methodological approaches. He has coauthored research that uses <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/social-trends\/2018\/12\/17\/gender-and-jobs-in-online-image-searches\/\">computer vision<\/a> to understand <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2019\/05\/23\/men-appear-twice-as-often-as-women-in-news-photos-on-facebook\/\">gender in online images<\/a>;\u00a0work that applies natural language processing to measure <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2018\/07\/18\/taking-sides-on-facebook-how-congressional-outreach-changed-under-president-trump\">partisan conflict<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2017\/12\/18\/sharing-the-news-in-a-polarized-congress\/\">information sharing<\/a> among elected officials; and work that <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/2019\/04\/24\/sizing-up-twitter-users\/\">combines survey and social media data<\/a> to better understand behavior online.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hughes received his Ph.D. in government from the University of Virginia, where he used natural language processing, survey experiments and television broadcast data to measure how political communication shapes voting behavior and attitudes. His academic work appears in journals such as <em>Political Science Research and Methods, Public Administration Review, <\/em>and<em> The Journal of Political Marketing<\/em>.
