# Recession Not Over

With the nation’s gross domestic product registering gains for nearly a year, some economists have declared the recession over. The American people disagree. A 54%-majority says the economy is still in a recession. Roughly four-in-ten (41%) are more optimistic, believing that the economy is beginning to come out of the recession (but not out yet). Only 3% of Americans are willing to declare that the recession is over. Whites (57%) are more inclined than blacks (45%) or Hispanics (43%) to say the recession is ongoing. Republicans (63%) are more inclined than Democrats (43%) to say the same.
